This year’s home international season kicked off with the Veterans team travelling up to Derbyshire to run the individual race on Cowms Rocks and the relay on Haggside.
With four team members making the epic journey done from the Coast and Islands event on Col and four last minute substitutes stepping up we were confident we had a good team. The individual race was run in the wind, rain, hail and mist but that played to the Welsh strengths and with Rhys Findlay Robinson winning M40, Tim Higginbottom and Dave Alcock coming in first and second M50 and plenty of other second and third places we finished the day in second place ahead of the Scots and Irish.
Sunday’s relay on Haggside, conveniently on the doorstep of our accommodation, was run in much better weather and provided just as much excitement and heroics. Niall Reynolds completed his race despite face-planting on the run-in and requiring a trip to A&E. And Cerys Manning provided one of the most exciting relay finishes ever, running neck and neck with Kim Baxter over the final spectator loop and only overtaking Kim on the line to bring the team of Alice Bedwell, Ian Jones and Cerys Manning into first place. Again the whole team performed well and we consolidated our second place ahead of the Scots and Irish, ensuring that we regained the coveted Stone Wall trophy.
