This summer the Welsh Junior Orienteering Squad (and friends) spent nine days training and racing in the superb terrain around Uppsala. We stayed in IF Thor’s club hut which is on the map for the map for one of the O-ringen areas from 2022 and close to Lunsen, “arguably the best orienteering area in Sweden”

Many of the juniors had never orienteered in Scandinavia before and we certainly threw them in at the deep end to get to grips with trusting your compass, recognising knolls and deciding just how big a boulder has to be before it appears on the map. It was also good to attend a Tuesday evening training session with IF Thor
All the training seemed to pay off at the races on the final weekend - everyone got round their courses on both days and we had a couple of prize-winners.
As well as training and racing we found time to do a lot of swimming; explore Uppsala and learn about Carl Linneaus; do a splendid quiz; bump into some Swedish ex-SBOCers; pick plenty of whinberries and lingonberries; and eat Flying Jacob (thankyou Fay Stemp-Walsh)
